the flu shot makes me sick...I have had the flu and it didnt cause me to get as sick as the actual shot. I am Type 1 diabetic, the shot made me sick the first few years I was diagnosed (I was diagnosed at 8) since I have been out of high school I haven't gotten the shot (usually because I don't make it to the doctor in time to get one) and I notice I don't get sick every year....so I think its different with every person. I am type 1 diabetic and haven't died when i get the flu, it affects me like it would any other 22 year old girl. good luck!

Well I think it's pretty important to get a flu shot. As a type 1 diabetic I know if I were to get the flu I run the risk of having to deal with ketones, dehydration, and as with this virus other symptoms that can complicate blood sugar and fluid balance. So I get one. You can end up in the ICU and yes people still can die from it. But this is not a guarantee so the shot is just proactive. The shot contains a dead virus so it can not cause the flu. If you were exposed and had it before you got the shot and maybe the day you got the shot you get symptoms you probably already had the flu.

Bodie has never had a flu shot. He was in school last year, and has also been playing with kids that are older and he has been exposed to all sorts of germs. Aside from a cold and the winter vomiting virus (which thankfully we have never had to hospitalize him for.) he has never gotten the flu...even though I had it last year as did his grandparents whom he had stayed with the week before! I was the only one taking care of the kids when I had the flu because my DH was deployed. The dr. couldn't believe I had it and the kids didn't when we went in. I don't like to give shots if I don't "have" to. My kids wash their hands and face all the time and we have been VERY healthy.

The Flu vaccines are a guess work by the government gurus and the labs. They do computer analysis and try to anticipate what variety of flu is going to be bad for the next year and make a vaccine that should help against it.

Ok, Last year they missed entirely and the variety of flu going around was not one we were vaccinated against.

I am allergic to something they use in the vaccines and it makes me get the flu as if I were exposed to it directly instead of protecting me from it by building antibodies.

I mostly stay home during flu season and try not to be in large crowds of people.

Flu can put anyone with a compromised immune system in ICU and/or kill them. A lot of the medications we take compromise our immune systems. So we are more at risk than other people. That doesn't matter whether we are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetics, have Asthma or Bronchitis, or anything else. We are more at risk than the general public.

It's really important. Not so much because people die from the flu, which they certainly can if they are in frail health. But the flu wreaks total havoc with your blood glucose for days, sometimes weeks, so it's important to get one. I've gotten one every year for the last 10 years or so, and have never gotten the flu.

I would like to share my experience.

My son (7) got a flu shot a few years ago, I believe when he was 3. Not 2 days later he got the flu so bad we could not keep his temp down. He seizured. He had to be rushed to the hospital. It took him 2 days before he recognized us as mom and dad again. All the nurses and doctors will always tell us it had nothing to do with the flu shot. However we still have not given him another and he has not since become that sick.

However, in the defense of the medicall people out here. He also reacted the same way to the chicken pocks shot. Once again got the chicken pocks right after. Hence the doctors don't understand how his body reacts these way to these vaccine's.

Even though I am not one for alot of immunizations...I do Strongly feel that diabetics should have annual flu shots...their immunities are already compromised due to the illness and it's effect on the Kidneys.Liver and Pancreas...the Flu CAN kill anyone but especially those with already weakened immunities and more so Children with weakened Immune systems. And YES people do still die from the flu.

diabetes compromises your immune system and makes one more vulnerable to illnesses. getting a yearly flu shot is highly recommended. it's also a good idea to get a pneumonia shot every ten years. and yes the flu does have the potential to kill a type 1 diabetic.
