As a society focused on weight, people often take drastic steps to achieve weight lossin hopes of reaching an ideal weight. They may take drugs designed to reduce weight. They may cut back severely on their food intake. They may begin an extreme exercise routine. All of these actions can cause damage to the body. The person may reach their ideal weight in a short amount of time, but their body will not be as healthy as it should be. Reducing weight is important and the desire to do so quickly can often overshadow the need to do so in a slow, healthy manner.
People in the overweight and obese categories are at greater risks for high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. For reasons of good health more than appearance people in those categories should consult with their doctor and establish a safe plan for weight reduction.
