As with all types of cancer, treatment will vary according to the type of cancer a patient has and how far the disease has developed. Typically, with colorectal cancer a patient will receive surgery to remove the diseased part of the bowel. The two healthy sections are then rejoined and depending on which part and how much of the colon was removed a colostomy bag may be required. Sometime this is temporary and sometimes it may be a permanent requirement. Usually a course of radiation treatment or chemotherapy will be given after the operation to ensure all the cancerous cells are removed.
