The benefits of prescribed treatments for depression

Prolonged feelings of sadness can be an indication of depression but the best thing you can do if you ever experience these feelings is to see a medical professional to have your condition professionally diagnosed. For the unfortunate individuals who do suffer with this problem, they are lucky to have such a range of treatments for depression and therapies to take advantage of these days. Depression should no longer be the seemingly permanent problem it once was but as with many medical conditions, an early diagnosis is preferably; unfortunately the cost can still be high. The range of depression treatments and therapies currently used by psychiatrists primarily revolve around cognitive behavior and interpersonal therapy.

In a short space of time, sometimes as little as twenty weeks, the patient can start to see enormous positive progress in beating their condition. The diagnosis is all important and must be obtained from a doctor regarded highly in this field as the correct assessment as to the type of depression causing the problem, is paramount in a successful treatment. The reason for this is because not all depressions are the same and neither are the medications so you can understand why this diagnosis is important. The importance of this condition cannot be underestimated and is highlighted in the large number of medications now available to help with depressive conditions.

The most popular anti-depressant medications include the newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and monoamine oxidase inhibitors but the older tricyclics are not generally used as much.

Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Strangely, despite these side effects, the doctor may believe the patient will be better off taking a mixture of these drugs to help the condition. In these circumstances it may be necessary for the doctor to prescribe two or more drugs to help an individual patient.

If the doctor feels it will help he may raise or lower the dosage of the medication he has prescribed in order to best meet the patient's personal requirement. It is important that the patient does not try experimenting with their depression medication as it could have disastrous results and should be left to the doctor involved.

Anti-anxiety or sedatives however, should never be mistaken as a form of medication. Although often prescribed as a combination treatment with other medication, anti-anxiety drugs are not used to cure the problem.

Often confused as part of the depression medication, their real purpose is merely to reduce the stress levels of the patient while he continues to take the other drugs. The tricyclic drugs cause some common side-effects which are not generally seen to the same degree with other types of medication. Strangely, quite a few users do not appear to mind the side effects for the tricyclic variety and function normally while using them. A doctor would always recommend that the patient contact them immediately a situation like this occurs so another drug can be given that does not cause any side-effects.
