Prolonged High Blood Sugar Levels

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Prolonged exposure to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) will cause long-term damage to your body. But hypoglycemia, low blood sugars, can cause immediate harmful effects including a diabetic coma. It is important to be able to recognize the signs when your blood sugar is too low and to carry emergency supplies to rectify the situation even in cases of diabetes and obesity.

People will react and show different symptoms when their blood glucose levels are too low. They can include some or all of the following:

* Feeling hungry * Feeling nervous or panicked * Feeling light-headed or dizzy * Weakness or lethargy (wanting to go to sleep) * You may be confused, having difficulty speaking or stringing thoughts together.

Once you have experienced hypoglycemia a few times you will begin to recognize the signals your body will give you when you need more food in your body. It is important to check you blood sugar with your monitor and have something right away that will act immediately to raise your blood sugars. Hard candies or glucose tablets work fast and are easy to have on you at all times. In case you are not able to help yourself, carry something that identifies you as a diabetic and instructions of what to do and who to call if you need assistance.

Once you have eaten something, test your blood sugar again in 15 minutes to make sure that it is going back to a normal range. You will want to have a snack or a meal too as the burst of sugar will not be long lasting.

By eating small and frequent meals every two to three hours you can lessen the chances of having hyperglycemia. Another safety precaution that should be taken includes eating prior to exercising and afterwards to keep up your energy level.

Elevated blood sugars are not good for your body and prolonged exposure to high blood sugars can have devastating affects on your organs (specifically your heart, kidneys, and eyes). Recognizing the signs of high glucose levels and testing regularly can help to keep you aware and in control of this important part of being a diabetic.

The symptoms that indicate your blood sugar is too high are the same signs that you might recognize from when you were first diagnosed with diabetes - an extreme thirst, frequent urination, and a feeling of lethargy. The good news is that once you are aware of how your body reacts to high blood sugar you can act more quickly because you know what is going on with your body.

If you are sick or are taking certain medications your blood glucose levels could be higher than normal. It is important to advise your pharmacist that you are diabetic when you are picking up your prescription. They can advise you of the side effects you can expect and what you should do about them if anything.

If your blood sugar is high everyday at the same time it may be a signal that your body needs more insulin. If you are comfortable adjusting your own dosage do so in small increments. If you are not comfortable a call in to your doctor or diabetes educator is in order and they can advise you on any adjustments that you will need to make.

In addition, review what you have eaten recently. If you have tried a new food or have been less active lately or you have eaten a food high in carbohydrates that is probably the reason for the high blood sugar readings. Once you know the reason for the high blood sugars you can do something to fix it and prevent it from happening again.

What Are SSRIs and SNRIs?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Another depression medication that is new to the market is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI.  This medicine works by changing the serotonin in your brain.  Serotonin and Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SNRIs are another type depression medication that works by increasing the availability of the brain chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine.  Your doctor will help you to determine which type of medication you should use.  Your life style, age, weight, and emotional history and the severity of your depression will also play a factor in the type of depression medication that you will need to take.

Finding a Lawyer for Medical Malpractice Claims

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

The Medical Malpractice Insurers for hospitals, doctors, clinics, and health care workers do not like lawsuits.  Often times a jury will reward a victim or the family of a victim of medical malpractice more then what the insurer bargained for originally.  Many times these insures like to settle these medical malpractices claims out of court and avoid a jury trial.  It certainly becomes bad PR for everyone involved. You can find information on lawyers who specialize in handling these types of cases and will work for you and your suit.  They are experienced in dealing with insurers and know the law well.

Regarding Dental Assisting

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

My job stinks. I’ve been thinking of making a change - something that won’t require too much school, but is a cut above bartending. I was told to check out dental assisting. I suppose dealing with bad breath and fillings beats getting groped by drunks.
After poking around on the web reading up on How To Become A Dental Assistant, I think it’s worth considering. The pay does appear to be better than I’m making now, and the hours are decent.
I can’t wait to ditch my current boss - so it may be worth it to do the training at night or over the weekend.
I’ll keep you posted.

The Advantage of Lazer Back Surgery

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

There are several reasons that doctors and patients alike prefer laser back surgery over the more traditional back surgery. One of the reason’s patients prefers lazer back surgery is the significant decrease in scarring. They like knowing that they won’t have scars that will serve as permanent reminders of the surgery.Doctors like the fact that there is a reduced risk of infection when a patient has laser back surgery preformed. Because they are using a laser to repair the back damage doctors don’t require the large incision which limits the chance of an infection mixing with the patient’s blood. A patient who doesn’t have to worry about fighting an infection will heal faster and they will be able to go home sooner.

Thinking About Dental Office Assistant Careers

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Lost my job again. I’ve been thinking of a career change anyway, so it might be for the best. A friend said to check out dental office assistant careers. I’m a bit squeamish, so I’m leery of the idea, but the pay is good and the jobs are stable.
In particular, I’ve been checking out
Dental Assistant Colleges. Salaries vary a lot from one office to the next, but there appears to be a shortage, so prospects are good.
I can’t wait to ditch my current boss - so it may be worth it to do the training at night or over the weekend.
I’ll keep you posted.
