Herniated Disc? Don’t Jump into Surgery
Sunday, November 23rd, 2008Being diagnosed with a ruptured or herniated disc does not automatically mean that you will be needed spine surgery. About 50% of patients with herniated discs in their lower backs tend to make a full recovery within one month. Only about 10% of patients who suffer extreme lower pain consistently for over six weeks will surgery be discussed. There are three different operations to consider when discussing spine surgery with your physician. A Discectomy is the actual removal of the herniated disc material pressing on the nerve root; a Laminotomy relieves the disc pressure rather than removing anything; and a Percutaneous Discectomy is performed for bulging discs that have ruptured into the spinal canal.
