Functional Fitness - It’s a Good Thing
Monday, December 31st, 2007I guess functional fitness is the latest buzzword in the fitness industry. Apparently it's replaced "core work" as the thing every personal trainer specializes in. Ok, not "every" personal trainer…..it just seems that way. Not that I have anything against either core work or functional fitness. They both basically adhere to the idea of doing exercises that will actually help you live your life, as opposed to just looking good. I mean, when's the last time you used the motion of pushing away with your arms as in a bench press during your daily life? Functional fitness has you doing exercises that actually replicate the motions that we do on a daily basis. The deadlift would be a good example. Bending down to pick stuff up off the floor….happens all the time. Having said that, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water here. Many exercises that may not actually be "functional" are still good at building strength or muscle, which can then be transferred over to functional exercises.
